How to set-up a promotional discount coupon in Magento

In this post we will show you how to create a simple percent off discount for one of your categories.

It could be free shipping, a flat amount off or involve a minimum purchase. The discount or free shipping might apply to all the products or just a certain subset. Magento’s flexible approach make it easy to tailor discounts to your customers and business.

1. Login navigate to promotions

First step is to login to Magento’s Admin Panel and navigate to Promotions > Shopping Cart Price Rules.

Click on the “Add New Rule” button at the top of the page.

The add/edit promotion page will contain four tabs down the left hand side.

  • Rule Information
  • Conditions
  • Actions
  • Labels

2. Rule Information

In the Rule Information tab the basics of the promotion are set.

First set the Rule Name and Description, a detailed rule name saves time updating the promotion later. You will also need to set the Status to Active and specify which Customer Groups you want to be able to use the promotion.

Set Coupon to specific coupon and enter a Coupon Code the customer will use. Stick to something simple containing just letters and numbers so customers can easily enter the code.

At this stage you can specify Uses per coupon, entering a number here will only allow the first X customers to use the coupon code, after which it will no longer be available. The next input is Uses per customers this allows you to set a maximum number of times an individual logged in user can use the code.

You may specify a start and end date during which customers can use the coupon on the website, or leave blank.

3. Conditions

You can assign conditions to your new promotion. By default the coupon will apply to all orders without condition. Click the Plus sign to add a condition. For example….

  • Sub Total is £100 would only allow the coupon to be used on orders over £100.00.
  • Shipping Country is Andorra would only allow the coupon to be used on orders being shipped to Andorra.

4. Actions

If the above conditions have been met, Magento then applies the action. We will choose Percentage of product price discount from the Apply drop down, and set the Discount Amount to 5 for a 5% discount.

At this stage we can also choose to apply Free Shipping to the order.

5. Labels

The labels tab allows you to specify what the user will see the discount called on their checkout.

Finish and test

Click the Save button at the top of the page to save the discount, and it is always a good idea to test your new promotional code before sending it out to customers.

User experience

Make sure your Magento site is set-up to hide the discount box when you are not actually running any promotions. You can also include a list of any live discounts which are available. These simple changes to your site will stop customers getting distracted by jumping off to third party discount coupon websites trying to find the best deal and forgetting to finish their order on your website.
